Anika

When Anika woke the morning after banishing Axel from the paranormal community, she forgot for a moment about their fight and wondered why he wasn’t sleeping beside her. Then her memories returned, and everything came crashing down.

Anika forced the tears to remain in her eyes. She’d cry no more over Axel Hansen, no matter how much his betrayal had hurt her. No, she meant what she’d said. She’d been okay for five years without him, and she’d be okay again now without him.

Then why does it hurt so much? a voice in the back of her mind asked, a voice she promptly ignored.

Letting Axel in again had only caused her heartache and distracted her from her true mission—finding her parents’ killers.

Forcing herself to get up, Anika left her tent, showered, had breakfast, and then shifted for a run through the forest. She came back, feeling much more clear-headed and determined to focus on her mission. Axel was in the past, where he belonged.

Anika had never been a big fan of technology and loved her simple life in the forest, but she did still have a smartphone. It was how she’d filmed and uploaded the video that called out her parents’ killers. She took out the smartphone now and used it to check the video. It was still unpublished, and nothing she did let her publish it again. Thinking she’d only find her parents’ killers if they saw the video, Anika made a new account and uploaded the video under a different name. She hoped that it would remain online long enough for her parents’ killers to see it this time.

As Anika waited for her reuploaded video to be published and for views to appear, she browsed the internet, searching for information about people who hunted shifters. She doubted they’d be stupid enough to advertise their crimes online, but she had nothing better to do, and well, it stopped her from thinking of Axel. She would not let her thoughts dwell on him.

Over the next couple of hours, Anika tried to block out her heartache and the memories of her one and only night together with Axel. Her bed still smelled of him, and thinking about what she’d lost hurt.

This was meant to be our second chance, a voice in the back of her mind sadly said. For a brief moment, Anika allowed herself to picture what it would have been like if things had lasted between her and Axel. She pictured them living together in the forest, looking after the kids. In her mind, she saw them having kids of their own.

Anika shook the thought from her head. Axel had crushed all hopes of a second chance when he’d betrayed her. Instead, she clicked on another useless link and went further down the internet rabbit hole. There were pages upon pages of apparent paranormal being sightings, but most of them were unverified and blurry images. Though she did see one picture that looked remarkably like Annie and had to chuckle at the thought of her sasquatch friend swimming boldly in a lake.
